The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday released Rs 1.60 crore from its national calamity fund for providing immediate relief to families affected by the heaviest snowfall in the state in 15 years.

A sum of Rs 20 lakh each has been released to deputy commissioners of Poonch and Anantnag districts and Rs 10 lakh each to other 12 deputy commissioners of the state, Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen said in Jammu.

He said Rs 50,000 would be provided to the next of kin of those who were killed, Rs 25,000 to the injured and Rs 5,000 to persons who suffered minor injuries.

Yaseen said Rs 10,000 each will be provided as immediate relief to those whose houses were damaged and Rs 6,000 each to those whose temporary huts were damaged.

The minister issued instructions to the divisional commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir to get the losses assessed immediately and submit reports within a week.

The revenue minister has also requested the central government to depute a special team to assess the losses, so that a relief package can be worked out for the affected people.
