Indian envoy to Nepal called home for talks

External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh has called India's Ambassador to Nepal, S S Mukherjee, to New Delhi for consultations on Monday.

Mukherjee will brief the minister on the situation in Nepal, external affairs ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said on Saturday.

He will also apprise New Delhi on his February 9 meeting with King Gyanendra, who has declared a state of emergency in Nepal and taken charge of the country's affairs.

The envoy has conveyed to the monarch New Delhi's view that there is a need to return to democracy at the earliest and lift all restrictions on political leaders in Nepal.

It has been conveyed to Kathmandu that New Delhi remains committed to supporting all efforts to bring about political stability and economic recovery in Nepal.
