The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday blamed the United Progressive Alliance government for pursuing a soft policy towards terrorism, leading to a spurt in subversive activities.

Referring to Wednesday's attack on the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore, BJP president Lal Kishenchand Advani said such incidents proved the failure of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the internal security front.

"It is not happening due to executive weaknesses but due to policy failure and distortion," he said.

The former deputy prime minister said the National Democratic Alliance government was also in favour of normalisation of relations with Pakistan and, in fact, had taken the initiative in that direction only when Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf assured that cross-border terrorism will be curbed.

The recent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, Ayodhya and, now, in Bangalore only indicated that cross-border terrorism was continuing, he said.

Advani said the incident was a matter of concern as it had happened despite inputs to the Union government by the intelligence agencies about the possibility of such an attack.

He said he had spoken to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on the issue and urged him to find out what measures the State government had taken after the information about the possible terrorist strike was passed on to them.
