Pakistan has said massive landslides caused by the October 8 earthquake in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have not in anyway altered the status of Line of Control.

The status of the LoC remains unchanged, Pakistan's Federal Relief Commissioner Maj Gen Farooq Ahmed told reporters in Islamabad Friday.

He was replying to questions about the government's preparations to deal with heavy floods expected from two huge lakes formed near Hattian Bala in PoK due to blockade of stream water caused by landslides.

The earthquake has severely affected the areas around LoC on both sides and a number of roads along the LoC have been blocked by heavy landslides.

Anticipating heavy floods in the quake-ravaged areas, the Pakistan government has formed a task force comprising of army and other officials to deal with the crisis.

Gen Ahmed said the task force has devised a strategy for safe release of water from the lake generated due to a landslide in Hatian Bala area without endangering people.

He said a 1.2-kilometre-long landslide had smashed a village of Lodhiabad near Hatian Bala and that 25 cusecs water was entering in this lake daily, which might cause a danger for the population in future.

The depth of water was approximately 80 ft in the two lakes created after a big portion of Danna mountain crashed and blocked two nullahs, he said.

According to official estimates, over 80,000 people were killed in PoK and North West Frontier Province in the October 8 temblor.
