India, Pakistan agree to release prisoners

Home secretaries of India and Pakistan have agreed to release all fishermen and other civilians who have completed their prison terms and whose nationalities have been verified.

Home Secretary V K Duggal and Secretary for Pakistan's Ministry of Interior Affairs Syed Kamal Shah, addressing a press conference at the end of two days of talks, said the prisoners will be released on September 12.

The two sides also agreed to have co-operation between their crack units, the Central Bureau of Investigation and Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency.

Experts from the two sides will meet shortly and discuss the modalities.

The sides also agreed to have better co-ordination and co-operation between their narcotics control agencies.

A memorandum of understanding will be formalised in the course of time.

The next round of talks will take place in Islamabad.
