Inclement weather conditions on Saturday prevented rescue teams from  reaching the wreckage of a Kamov-28 helicopter of the Navy, which had crashed near Belgaum in Karnataka on Friday.

"Heavy downpour and thick fog were preventing any aerial sorties to be undertaken to search for  the helicopter this morning," a naval spokesman said in New Delhi.

Army teams from the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre located in the area were also unable to trace the helicopter or reach for the survivors, if any, he said.

Six naval personnel were on board the Kamov-28, the Navy's submarine hunter helicopter, which was on its way from Goa to Vishakhapatnam. Of these, 4 are feared dead.

The helicopter lost contact with the ground, 25 minutes after it took off from Dabolim Naval airbase in Goa on Friday morning.
