Quota: Law students attempt suicide

Two law students from Coimbatore on Thursday attempted to immolation themselves near the Coimbatore District Collectorate, protesting against the recent Supreme Court order on quota for admission in self-financing colleges.

Even as the police kept strict watch, the students suddenly appeared at a crossing and poured kerosene, which they carried in two bottles, all over their bodies. However, before they could open a matchbox, police overpowered the students.

The two were identified as Paneerselvam,a third year student and Sathishkumar, a final year student, police said. The students also demanded bringing in a legislation in Parliament to find a solution to the 'burning issue' of quotas.

Adequate number of policemen had been posted near the collectorate upon receiving the information on Thursday morning.
