To raise people's confidence in the force, the Mumbai police is exploring the idea of expediting the trial of the dismissed police constable who allegedly raped a minor inside a police post last week, through a special court or a fast track court.

Although no senior police officer is willing to be quoted on record over this issue, it is learnt that the top brass of the Mumbai police wants the chargesheet against constable Sunil More to be filed as soon as possible and the trial to be held in a special or fast track court.

"The incident had shaken the people's trust in the police, but we might be able to convince them about our intention to  deliver justice by filing the chargesheet as soon as we can and by holding the trial through a special court," a senior police official told PTI in Mumbai today.

However, Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order) Javed Ahmed, said no time limit has been set and the chargesheet will be filed within the stipulated time given by law.

He said the police has not decided on trying the accused in a special court and it can be considered only at the time of filing the chargesheet.

Meanwhile, the Churchgate-Nariman Point Residents Association, which staged protests at Marine Drive in South Mumbai where the rape occurred, has demanded that police posts be made using transparent material.

At a meeting attended by Additional Commissioner of Police (South) S P Yadav and Deputy Commissioner of Police Naval Bajaj, the residents also demanded that both male and female cops be posted at police chowkies, and that records of visitors be maintained, association office-bearer Anil Bhatia said.
