The Gujarat government on Saturday set up an inquiry commission to probe the attack on Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav when he was on his way to visit the passengers injured in the Sabarmati train mishap on April 21, who were admitted in the SSG hospital at Vadodara.
The RJD chief had accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of conspiring to kill him.
Retired state high court judge N B Patel will head the commission, which will give its report in three months, officials at the CM's Office said.
N B Patel said he would conduct the inquiry in an impartial manner. "I have not yet got an official intimation about this decision but I was told about it yesterday [Saturday]," Patel told PTI.
Patel said he was yet to get the terms and conditions of the work he was to embark on.
Reacting to the appointment of the commission, Lalu Prasad Yadav it was nothing but an attempt by Modi to 'bury the issue'.
"I have no expectation from the commission set up by Modi to probe the attack on me," he told reporters in Patna. "The commission is set up not to unravel the conspiracy against me and those involved in it, but to give the entire issue a decent burial," he said.
On Friday, the Gujarat Congress had submitted a memorandum to Governor Naval Kishore Sharma seeking the imposition of President's rule in the state.
On Thursday, the governor briefed the CM on the attack after he returned from the accident site. The governor also sent his own report to the Centre.
Following the RJD chief's allegations that Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists were responsible for the attack on him, the railway police at Vadodara registered cases against some Bharatiya Janata Party workers.
