A day after he said it was for Lal Kishenchand Advani to decide whether he wanted to continue as BJP president, senior party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday said his views have been misinterpreted.

He made it clear he wants Advani to continue in the post.

Vajpayee, in a statement in New Delhi, said, "A wrong meaning is being given to my replies to questions put by reporters yesterday [Tuesday]. I have not said anything that might create a controversy over the continuance of Advani as BJP president."

Advani, the former PM said, was unanimously elected as party president a few months ago and is heading the party successfully.

"We all want him to steer the party in future too," he said in his brief statement.

Reacting to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh K S Sudarshan's remark that young leaders should head the BJP, Vajpayee had said, "It is a good suggestion. I am not holding any post. I am not doing much work. Nowadays, I don't have any work."

When asked if Advani should step down, he had said, "It is for him and the party to decide."
