Seven girl students belonging to the Students Federation of India, which owes allegiance to the Communist Party of India-Marxist, were taken into custody on Tuesday after they waved black flags against Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in protest against the government policy on self-financing professional institutions.

The incident occurred when the chief minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a new building for a women's college in Thiruvananthapuram, police said.

The protestors, who were sitting among the audience, stood up and raised slogans and waved black flags when Chandy turned up for the function.
