May 27, 2004 13:05 IST

Fiery Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has been arrested by the British authorities following an American request for extradition.

Egypt born Al-Masri is known for his fiery oratory and acquired British citizenship through marriage. He has been at the centre of controversy for sermons allegedly calling for jihad against western nations.

The government is seeking to strip the imam of his nationality, but he is currently appealing the decision.

Abu Hamza preaches at a mosque in the Finsbury Park neighbourhood of London.
