Dharam Singh is CLP leader in Karnataka

Political situation fluid in Karnataka

Dharam Singh is expected to head the first ever coalition government in Karnataka after he was elected Congress Legislature Party leader on Monday night.

However, coalition partner Janata Dal (Secular) is expected to make a last ditch effort to persuade the Congress to accept its demand that it should lead the government with Siddaramaiah as the chief minister.

The assembly election had resulted in a hung verdict with the JD (S) emerging as the kingmaker.

JD (S) leaders, including former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and the party's legislature party leader Siddaramaiah, are expected to visit Delhi for consultations with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition, gearing to stake claim and form a government in Karnataka, would have a Common Minimum Programme, All India Congress Committee general secretary Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Deshmukh, Singh and other Congress leaders were expected to leave for Delhi on Tuesday evening. A clear picture on the composition of the Congress-led coalition would emerge only after they meet Gandhi.
