The Centre on Tuesday asserted that no pressure has been put on governors appointed by the National Democratic Alliance regime to resign.
But Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said only the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders were chosen for the gubernatorial posts flouting the spirit of the Constitution.
"No pressure is being exerted on the NDA-appointed governors to step down," Jaiswal told reporters in response to the charge made by former deputy prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani that governors with BJP background were being made to resign.
"What Advani stated has been denied by Rajasthan Governor Madan Lal Khurana who has contended that no one had asked him to step down," the minister said.
"The way these BJP and RSS leaders, who were working 24 hours for their organisations, were given the constitutional offices showed that the appointments had not been made with the right intention," the minister alleged.
Asked if the UPA government was considering changing governors, Jaiswal said he was not aware of any such move.
