Cross border infiltration has picked this summer after the melting of snow in the higher reaches along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Command chief Lt Gen Hari Prasad said on Thursday.

"Cross border infiltration has picked after the onset of summer in Jammu and Kashmir after having gone down during the winter months," Gen Prasad told reporters on the sidelines of a function to mark the raising of the Northern Command in Udhampur.

Gen Prasad is in charge of the operational command of the northern theatre, which comprises the world's highest battlefield Siachen Glacier in Kargil to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

"At one time, troops did achieve a zero infiltration situation along the LoC in J&K during this year," he said.

Giving details about incidents of infiltration, he said there has been 18 bids along the LoC from January 1 this year till now and troops killed 41 of the terrorists.

The army is now in a position to foil further bids as the fencing along the LoC has been bolstered by thermal imagers and night vision devices.

Referring to the security situation in the state, Gen Prasad said it is fast heading towards normalcy and peace.
