Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh's visit to the prime minister's office on Tuesday, coinciding with a Cabinet meeting, fuelled speculation about his appointment as deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.

While many speculated that his presence in the meeting could be a precursor to his appointment to the prestigious post, an official spokesperson clarified that Singh did not  attend the Cabinet meeting.

The spokesperson, however, did not explain the reason for Singh's visit to the South Block.

The names of Singh, former Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna and noted economist Arjun Sengupta have been doing the rounds for the deputy chairman's post in the Planning Commission.
