Flood situation in Assam improves

The overall flood situation in Assam on Monday improved with all the major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, showing signs of receding in the flood affected districts.

Official sources said the death toll in the current wave of floods has risen to 163. Eighteen people drowned in a boat capsize in the Kiling river in Morigaon district on Sunday evening. Another person drowned in Karimganj.

The situation in Morigaon district is still grave with NH-37 still submerged and road communication between Upper and Lower Assam remains disrupted.
 
All government offices, including the deputy commissioner's office, the deputy commissioner's bungalow and several other important buildings in the district are submerged under flood waters.

In Karimganj district, the overall situation is grim with road communication between Guwahati, Hailakandi and
Cachar district still disrupted.

There is no fresh report of any damage from other flood affected districts.

Traffic along NH-52 in Darrang district is being marshalled in convoys every half an hour on both sides.

The floods have affected more than 1.17 crore people in 27 districts of the state.
