Widespread violence was reported in Imphal when several women defied indefinite curfew and attempted to take out a procession to protest against the death of Th Manorama Devi at the hands of Assam Rifles personnel, official sources said on Friday.
Despite a downpour, mobs tried to break down security barricades in curfew-bound areas to take out a procession in Imphal town. Stoning, burning of tyres, blockade of roads to prevent movement of security vehicles were reported from various parts of curfew-bound areas.
Police burst tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse crowds at various places, including Kongba, Sangangpham, Tera, Uchekon and some on the outskirts of the state capital.

Police and security reinforcements have been rushed to these places to prevent people from the indefinite curfew and launching any form of protest.
Official sources said all persons injured in police action were taken to the J N Hospital and Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital for treatment.
At least three government offices were set afire late on Thursday night despite a curfew. The offices are those of the Public Works Department at Porompat, state academy of training at Takyelpak and Sub Deputy Collector's office at Nambol - all in Greater Imphal and nearby areas.
