109 dead in Bihar floods

Over 15 million have been affected and 109 persons have lost their lives in the worst floods in Bihar, which is showing no signs of abating.

Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Darbhanga and Madhubani districts remained cut off from the rest of the state for the sixth day on Friday.

Flood waters have inundated newer areas in Begusarai, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Sitamarhi districts.

The death toll crossed 100 after 40 people drowned in the swollen Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur district on Thursday followed by reports of deaths from Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Madhubani and Khagaria.

According to the state Relief and Rehabilitation Department, 4,889 villages under 1,529 panchayats in 16 districts are inundated. "As per our records, the floods have affected 1.12 crore people in north Bihar," an official said.

All major rivers are running above the danger mark and continue to show a rising trend.

Millions of people continued to live under the open sky and are struggling against the odds to survive.
