Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, who surrendered to Indian forces in the 1971 war, died of cardiac arrest at a military hospital in Lahore late Sunday, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan news agency. He was 89.
Gen Niazi was a diabetic who also had respiratory problems.

He had served as a junior officer during World War II, and later held various command positions in Pakistan army after the country won independence from Britain in 1947.
Niazi is survived by his two sons and three daughters.
