The National Cadet Corps, for the first time in its history, is planning to send girl cadets on a Mount Everest expedition.

Seven girl cadets will be part of an all-women expedition to be undertaken by the Indian Army in May-June next year.

"Two test expeditions were carried out recently in the Garhwal Himalayas to shortlist candidates for the adventure," NCC Director-General Lt Gen M C Bhandari said in Kolkata on Thursday.

"The sites for the test expeditions were the Abigamin peak in the Garhwal Himalayas and the Manali peak in Himachal Pradesh," he said. The girl cadets successfully scaled the Manali peak, he said.

NCC sources said 11 cadets have been shortlisted, and seven among them will be selected to be part of the all-women team.
