In yet another pro-minority move, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to set up a Madarsa Education Board to conduct examinations at the state level.

A Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav approved the ordinance for setting up 'Madarsa Education Board' on the lines of Sanskrit Education Board, Chief Secretary V K Mittal told reporters.

There was no uniform system for conducting examination for students of the nearly 1,100 madrasas in the state, 291 of which were government aided, he said. The new board, he added, will help regulate them.

The government had earlier decided to set up a Urdu University.
