Kantilal Amrutiya Awas, Bharatiya Janata Party legislator in the Gujarat assembly, was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment along with six others for the murder of a former mayor in Morbi in Rajkot district in 1999.
Fast Track Judge A D Mogal in Godal in Rajkot district, while sentencing Awas, who represents Morbi constituency, and others, acquitted one person in the murder of Prakash Raveshia on September 16, 1999.
Four persons stabbed Raveshia outside the Nagrik Bank as he emerged from a meeting.
The MLA, along with a father-son duo, had conspired to kill the former mayor.
The crime was executed by four persons, all of whom have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Awas had feared the political rise of Raveshia, who after holding the post of mayor was seeking an MLA's ticket and the two had had a scuffle a few days before the murder.
The others sentenced were Ramesh Koli, Narottam Koli, Magamgokal Koli and Pravin Koli (who stabbed Raveshia) and Gangaram Koli and his son Prakash.
