Politicians in Bihar and Jharkhand are in for tough times.

The income tax department is set to issue notices to 230 of them for discrepancies between their returns and assets.

The list of those to whom the notices will be sent include parliamentarians, legislators and ministers.

"We found wide discrepancies in income tax returns and declaration of asset statements from politicians at the time of the Lok Sabha elections this year and we have no option but to issue notices to them," one source said.

While filing nomination papers, the candidates were required to list out their assets.

An I-T official told rediff.com, "The department may issue notice to 230 politicians. It will also inform the election commission in this connection."

The election commission has put on its website the asset statements of all the politicians who contested the polls.

Following this, the I-T department inquired into the returns filed by the candidates.

The I-T officials were shocked to learn that there were some politicians who had huge assets, but they hardly filed returns.
