Assam to honour children killed in blast

The Assam government has decided to set up libraries in memory of the children killed in Sunday's bomb blast in Dhemaji.

The libraries will be in the schools where they studied.

The government will also observe August 16 as state mourning day.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made these announcements during his visit to Dhemaji, where he met family members of those killed.

He also visited the hospital where 23 people are undergoing treatment and inquired about their health.

Thirteen people, including 10 schoolgirls were, killed when United Liberation Front of Asom terrorists triggered a blast in a school during Independence Day celebration.

The CM, who accompanied Governor Lt Gen (retd) Ajai Singh, also said that the ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh announced on Monday for the next of kin of those killed had been raised to Rs 5 lakh.

"Considering the courage and bravery showed by the students and general public in attending the Independence Day celebrations despite the boycott call, we have decided to raise the ex-gratia for the kin of deceased to Rs 5 lakh each. For those injured the amount has been raised to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 50,000," he said.

The state government was also considering giving bravery awards posthumously to those killed, he said.
