The West Bengal police on Wednesday seized over 25,000 rounds of cartridges from a Jammu and Kashmir-bound truck in south Kolkata.
The 7.62 bore cartridges, meant for AK-47 assault rifles, were found from the abandoned truck at Dhabitola locality, Kolkata Police Commissioner Sujoy Chakarabarty told reporters.
"We have sent the cartridges to forensic experts," he said.
He said prima facie the ammunition appeared to be meant for militants
"We have begun investigations and hope to unravel the truth soon," the police commissioner said and added there was no immediate evidence that the consignment came from militant bases in Bangladesh.
The truck, ML 075859, is believed to have arrived in Kolkata from Meghalaya last month.
