A bullet hit Pillai on his left upper arm while his personal security officer and the driver were also injured in the attack.

Immediately after the ambush, police and army personnel surrounded the forest where the militants had taken refuge and engaged them in an encounter.

The militants hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately resulting in the death of a soldier and a police constable. Ten others, including six policemen, were injured.

A senior police officer said one militant was gunned down in the afternoon while 'the other militant is still firing at the security forces'.
