Pakistani troops on Tuesday shelled several Indian border out posts and forward defence locations in the Noushera and Samba sectors in Jammu division even as the guns fell silent along the Line of Control in the Kashmir valley.

Since Monday evening, Pakistani rangers fired about 50 mortar bombs targeting Kalsian, Jhanger and Sher Makri areas in Rajouri district (Noushera sector) prompting Indian troops to retaliate, officials said. There was no loss of life or damage on the Indian side.

Both sides also traded small arms fire intermittently along the International Border in Ramgarh and Samba sectors on Monday night.

For the first time in recent years, guns fell silent along the LoC with no reports of Pakistani shelling in Kupwara and Baramulla districts, said to be the gateway for infiltrators from across the border.

Carrying forward the peace process, India and Pakistan on Tuesday agreed on an Eid ceasefire along the LoC, international border and the Siachen glacier, the first formal truce between the two armies since the outbreak of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
