Underworld don Abu Salem completes six months in a Portugal jail on Tuesday, but India still awaits his extradition to stand trial in the 1993 bomb blast and several other cases, official sources said on Monday.

Salem was detained in Portugal on September 18 along with his wife and former actress Monica Bedi for staying without proper documents.

Initially, he was remanded to custody for three months. The remand period was later extended by three more months to March 18.

Soon after his arrest, the CBI had put up a request for his extradition. They had also forwarded certain documents to support their claim that Salem is wanted in India for serious offences, the sources said.

Among other offences, Salem is stated to have helped underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in distributing arms and ammunition for use in the 1993 serial blasts.

Salem was arrested in Dubai two years ago for holding a fabricated passport.

However, he was let off, as India did not have extradition treaty with UAE then.

Even Portugal does not have extradition treaty but India has put up a friendly request for Salem's custody.
