The Union government on Tuesday promised to make a statement in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday on the controversial Uttar Pradesh tape.

The Samajwadi Party on Monday had submitted a video tape to Governor Vishnukant Shastri allegedly showing Chief Minister Mayawati asking her Bahujan Samajwadi Party legislators to contribute to the party fund from their constituency development kitty.

Acting on Speaker Manohar Joshi's directive, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said she had spoken

to Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and he had sought a day's time to collect relevant information from the state government.

The issue led to uproarious scences in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

In the Lok Sabha, the SP members trooped into the well of the House charging Mayawati with "encouraging corruption."

The SP members were supported in the Lower House by Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and P R Dasmunsi of the Congress.
