Assam flood situation critical

The flood situation in Assam on Thursday continued to remain critical with the water level in most rivers in the adversely affected districts rising, official sources said in Guwahati.

Nearly 300,000 people were affected in the first wave of floods in five districts.

In flood-prone Dhemaji district, the situation is grim with vast areas inundated and road and rail communication disrupted by the swollen Jiadhol River.

The situation in the Barak Valley is critical with the water level of Katakhal River at Matijuri in Hailakandi district at 1.37m above the danger level.

More than 150,000 people in 131 villages of the district have been affected by floods.

In neighbouring Karimganj district, Kushiara and Singla Rivers were flowing above the danger level.

In severely affected Nalbari district, the water level of the Brahmaputra River was rising. More than 70,000 people in 100 villages have been affected with road communication disrupted in several places.
