Fencing along Indo-Pak border in full swing

The Border Security Force and the Central Public Works Department are carrying out in fencing and flood lighting work along the Indo-Pak border in full swing, even as India and Pakistan make fresh peace overtures.

The government has taken a decision to fence 310kms out of the total 508kms of the border in the Gujarat sector, of which the CPWD has already completed 62kms of the border that passes through the dry terrain of Rann of Kutch, official sources said.

The CPWD has also completed fencing in Punjab and Rajasthan Sectors for a length of 1,500kms and has constructed roads for a length of 230kms, the sources said, adding flood lighting has also been carried out in these sectors.

In the Jammu sector, fencing and lighting work is being carried out by the BSF. Out of 180kms, 70kms has been fenced, while flood lighting has been completed in 40kms, they said.

The sources also said the CPWD has already constructed 1,700kms of road, 130 bridges and large number of culverts, along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal sector.

Around 750kms has been fenced and the remaining is in progress, they said, adding the target of 1,350kms is likely to be completed by December 2005.
