A Special Prevention of Terrorism Act court on Tuesday remanded to police custody till July 5 one of the accused in the Godhra train carnage Shoaib Yusuf Kalandar.

Kalandar was arrested from his residence in the sensitive Signal Falia locality in Godhra town on June 29.

Kalandar was on Tuesday brought to Ahmedabad from Vadodara by Special Investigating Team officials and produced before POTA judge Sonia Gokani, who remanded him to custody.

Special Public Prosecutor H M Dhruva submitted that Kalandar was a vendor at the Godhra railway station and he could throw light on the whereabouts of one of the main absconding accused and another vendor Salim Paanwala, who was also the leader of the vendors' association.

Also, investigators want to know where Kalandar stayed during the one year he had been absconding, Dhruva said.

The SIT also needed to probe his 'connections' with the prime conspirator in the train carnage Maulana Hussain Umarji.

Earlier, the Special POTA court had discharged Sayeed Abdul Sattar Kala, another accused due to lack of evidence.

Kala (41), who was allegedly a member of the core group instrumental in burning the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express, was directed by the court to furnish a personal bond of Rs 30,000 and surety of the same amount.

He had been arrested from Mumbai on April 9 last and remanded to police custody.

He was charged with accumulating funds from Pakistan through hawala channels and of being in constant touch with the prime accused, Maulana Hussain Umarji.

The printout of his mobile phone suggested underworld links, but the SIT failed to produce any evidence to convict him.
