Government suspends Mirwaiz's passport

January 09, 2003 12:12 IST

The government on Thursday suspended former Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's passport for four weeks.

A notice, served at his Delhi residence, said his passport was being suspended under section 10 (A) of the Passport Act as government was satisfied that his travel abroad was not in the interest of the nation.

Mirwaiz described the government's action as "unfortunate." He said he will meet Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Ghani Bhat to discuss the future course of action.
