Senior Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who underwent a surgery for cancer in the kidney, was on Monday night discharged from the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Mumbai, according to hospital sources.

One of Geelani's kidneys developed lumps and had to be removed, the sources said.

His son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah said Geelani had some post-surgery complications as he was already suffering from
chronic bronchitis and depends on a pace-maker.

His stitches were removed on Monday and was advised by doctors to go home, Shah told PTI.

Geelani was admitted to the TMH on February five after being flown in from a hospital in Ranchi and underwent the operation on February 11.

Shah said Geelani would be taken to the Jammu and Kashmir guest house in south Mumbai where he might stay for a couple of days before leaving for J&K.

Geelani's condition deteriorated in Ranchi as he was held in isolation for almost six months, Shah said.

Geelani, former Hurriyat Conference chairman and senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader, who has been under detention since last June in the Birsa Munda jail at Ranchi under the Public Safety Act, was on February eight released by the Jammu and Kashmir government on parole considering his health condition.

He was arrested on June nine last year following a series of raids conducted by Income Tax department officials and
police to put an end to funding of militant outfits in Jammu and Kashmir.
