Spurious parts procured from 'uncertified sources' are responsible for the spate of crashes involving MiGs in India, the Russian makers of aircraft said on Friday.

First Deputy General of MiG Corporation Vladimir Barkovskiy said a large quantity of 'uncertified spare parts are available, especially in Eastern Europe, which are not of best quality'.

"We cannot bear responsibility for spare parts," Barkovskiy said at the Aero India 2003, a five-day international exposition at Yelahanka on the outskirts of Bangalore.

He said only the MiG Corporation and Rosoboronexport are certified suppliers of MiG parts.

The number of accidents involving the MiGs is more in India compared to Eastern Europe and Russia, he said.

The MiG Corporation had supplied to the Indian government 'comparative data' regarding the number of accidents involving the aircraft in India and those in Eastern Europe and Russia.
