The storm that hit Andhra Pradesh's coastal belt on Monday night killed at least 31 people and left behind a trail of destruction in Krishna, West Godavari and Guntur districts.

Krishna, which accounted for 24 deaths in house collapses and heavy rains, was the worst affected, followed by West Godavari (4) and Guntur (3), official sources said in Hyderabad on Tuesday evening.

Torrential rains, accompanied by gales, caused heavy damage to crops and roads and uprooted trees and power lines, leading to power disruption in over 900 villages in the three districts.

A report quoting the Krishna district collectorate at Machilipatnam said about 3,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas.

Machilipatnam division reported ten deaths while Gudivada division eight, Vijayawada two and Nuzividu four, the report said.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who reviewed the situation soon after his return to Hyderabad from Delhi, will visit Guntur and Krishna districts on Wednesday.

Governor Surjit Singh Barnala expressed grief over the loss of life and property. Conveying his condolences to the members of the bereaved families, the governor said: "It is painful to note that nature was too cruel..."
