The Special Investigation Team on Thursday quizzed Maharashtra State Electricity Board chairman Ashoke Basak in connection with the fake stamp paper scam.

Basak was called to SIT office at Worli and questioned on the developments that had taken place during his tenure as the former additional chief secretary (home) of Maharashtra, SIT sources said in Mumbai.

According to the SIT, Basak, in his capacity as home secretary, had knowledge of the Karnataka government intercepting telephonic calls between prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi and others in which it had transpired that ACP M C Mulani had demanded a Rs 15 lakh bribe to delete names of Telgi's relatives from a charge sheet.

Basak accordingly informed R S Sharma, the then police commissioner of Pune, about allegations against Mulani. Yet, a few days later, Sharma included Mulani in the investigating team probing the scam, the sources said.

Basak was questioned about these issues and his statement recorded.

The SIT had also summoned former director general of police Subhash Malhotra for questioning. He, however, did not appear as he was reportedly in Delhi and suffering from viral fever.

He had reportedly given a clean chit to Sharma when the Subodh Jaiswal committee report was forwarded to him on alleged lapses in the probe into the fake stamp paper scam.

Meanwhile, Anil Gote, MLA from Dhule, moved the Mumbai high court for bail and permission to attend the winter session of the state legislature. His plea would be heard on Friday.
