In a breakthrough in the leakage of Common Admission Test papers for the Indian Institutes of Management, the CBI on Sunday night detained a person who allegedly leaked the question paper from the Institute of Banking Personnel Services.

Highly placed CBI sources said the lower rung employee of the Mumbai-based printing press took Rs 200,000 to leak the papers from the IBPS, a semi-government organisation responsible for printing CAT question paper.

The breakthrough came when an accused identified the employee to the CBI team camping in Mumbai since Friday. The agency would be registering his statement after which a decision about arresting him would be taken.

However, the IBPS has denied any involvement in the leakage of the question papers.

Some members of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, which had administrative control over this year's CAT, would also be questioned.

The CBI suspects some professors of having tipped-off Ranjit Singh, the alleged kingpin of the racket, about the question paper finally selected for the test.

The IIMs have a procedure of printing three sets of question papers and the decision about which one would be given to the candidates is taken at the last stage. Some member of the IIM faculty could have given this information to Singh.

Another CBI team is camping in Patna along with Singh alias Ranjit Don and questioning his associates. It is also collecting the various reports lodged against Singh with the Bihar Police.

Singh was arrested along with three others from a hotel in Delhi's South-West district on Sunday when he was leaking the question paper to four candidates. A photostat copy of the question paper was seized from them.
