The Chhattisgarh government on Saturday sought the army's help to combat floods, which have affected about 200 villages and more than 200,000 people in the state.

Although there was little rainfall on Saturday, as the floodwaters of Mahanadi River reached Janjgir and Raigarh districts more villages had been submerged, State Relief Commissioner M K Rout said in Raipur.

Army personnel have left their camp in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, and will arrive at Raipur by Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ajit Jogi visited the affected areas and distributed food packets.

He asked officials to show alacrity in implementing rescue and relief efforts and take steps to protect crops.

He also asked people to donate generously to the chief minister's relief fund and non-governmental organisations.
