Vocalist Niyaz Ahmed Khan dead

Renowned Hindustani vocalist Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan, 79, died in Mumbai on Tuesday after a brief illness, family sources said.

Khan belonged to the Kirana gharana, was a nephew of the great Abdul Kharim Khan and a winner of Afiz Ali and Tansen awards.

He was famous for his performance at the 1984 festival of India in the Albert Hall in Britain.

The New York Times had quoted his music album, which was released in 1970 in New York, as a bestseller.

Some of his famous disciples include Roopam Tathore, Poorvi Parekh, Kishori Parekh and Sunali Rathore.

Khan is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
