Suspected Naxalites on Wednesday morning abducted four police personnel, including a sub-inspector, from Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh.

A police spokesman said the police personnel -- a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector, a head constable and a home guard -- belong to the Ardhaveedu police station.

While on patrol duty, they were waylaid by a group of armed men in the forest areas near Katamrajepalli village around 0830 IST.

The armed men are suspected to be Naxalites from the Project Tiger dalam (armed squad) of the People's War group.

The abductors are yet to make any demands. Top police officials are monitoring the situation.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to the abductors not to harm the policemen as they were innocent persons performing their duty.
