Was the past decade kind to the Badshah of Bollywood?

As Shah Rukh Khan celebrates 28 years entertaining us with his movies, Joginder Tuteja looks back at the 2010s and their impact on SRK's career:

2010
My Name Is Khan: Rs 73 crore

With Billu not working out, Shah Rukh Khan decided to do something different the next year.

After multiple collaborations with Karan Johar, he decided to make My Name Is Khan with him, which commented on the socio-political positioning of Muslims after 9/11.

The film stoked a fair bit of controversy and though it didn't turn out to be a blockbuster, it was a success.

2011
Ra.One: Rs 114 crore
Don 2: Rs 107 crore

Producer Shah Rukh Khan decided to make a sci-fi thriller with Shah Rukh Khan. the actor.

Ra.One was the outcome.

What made Director Anubhav Sinha's film different from other movies in this genre was the inclusion of romance, humour, music and the showstopper song Chamak Challo.

The film opened huge and though there were bigger expectations, it settled for a Rs 100 crore club affair.

Don 2 was made at a lesser cost and struck a century too.

2012
Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Rs 122 crore

It was destined that Yash Chopra, who gave Shah Rukh his first blockbuster Darr, would also make his final film Jab Tak Hai Jaan with the superstar.

Yashji's swan song clashed with Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar, but still struck a century at the BO.

2013
Chennai Express: Rs 227 crore

Shah Rukh Khan collaborated with hit-maker Rohit Shetty and the results were there to be seen.

Chennai Express not only took a smash opening at the box office, but also sustained itself with family audiences.

Shah Rukh-Rohit-Deepika Padukone enjoyed their first-ever double century at the box office.

2014
Happy New Year: Rs 205 crore

It is surprising that Farah Khan's Happy New Year continues to find flak coming its way, especially since it ended up scoring a double century at the box office.

In fact, its opening of over Rs 40 crore was undisputed for many years.

2015
Dilwale: Rs 148 crore

After Chennai Express, Shah Rukh and Rohit Shetty collaborated again for Dilwale.

Kajol joined the show as did Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon.

Though Dilwale disappointed SRK-Rohit-Kajol-Varun fans, it totted up a decent score in the end.

2016
Dear Zindagi: Rs 68 crore

2016 was a quiet year for Shah Rukh. His only success was Dear Zindagi, where he played second fiddle to Alia Bhatt.

2017
Raees: Rs 138 crore

Raees clashed with Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil at the box office.

Rahul Dholakia's film on a Gujarati gangster earned another box office century for Khan.

2018
Zero: Rs 90 crore

Apart from 2009, the only other year in his 28 year career where Shah Rukh did not see a hit to his name was 2018.

His solitary release Zero was a major flop at the box office, especially since it was a Christmas release.

Directed by the previously successful Aanand L Rai, Zero featured the gorgeous Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

After the Zero debacle, Shah Rukh is on an extended sabbatical. He hasn't decided what his next film will be.

Will it be Raju Hirani's next?

Or will Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK give SRK the mama of all blockbusters he needs?
