In Barjatya-land, all you need is Prem, Raja Sen says.
Well, that was unexpected.
Sooraj Barjatya films are literally all about family, and while the trailer predictably stresses good ol' traditional familial ties, this time it emphasises opulence even more.
Girls twirling in synchronised motion, looking from above like a fluffy carwash? That is definitely more like Sanjay Leela Bhansali territory.
A lot of the first trailer of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo looks like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, to be honest. And that doesn't have to be a bad thing,
considering that film featured Bhansali's most enjoyably crafted romance and some genuine chemistry.
Of course, it'd help if leading lady Sonam Kapoor didn't look like she was Salman Khan's niece.
There's a lot more immediate drama than I anticipated in a Barjatya trailer after this long, instead of what I assumed would be on show: Where is the Antakshari? Where are the the boys and girls in t-shirts that inform us that they are indeed boys and girls? Where is all that shyness and lack of eye contact?
It's probably around, to be honest.
We just haven't gotten a whiff of it yet.
Instead, we see someone bumped off by a falling chariot, and someone almost done in by a falling chandelier. (Staircases, I gather, are now passe.) All signs may point to grand romance, though, as said, there looks to be more theatrical drama on store this time around: are there two Salman Khans, one with appropriately sinister porn-friendly moustache?
It doesn't seem to matter. And, honestly, it can't hurt: in Barjatya-land, all you need is Prem.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo releases November 2.
