After Vyjayanthimala refused the role of Aarti Devi, the character allegedly based on Indira Gandhi, Suchitra Sen stepped in.
Released during Indira Gandhi's tenure as prime minister, Aandhi was not allowed a full release, and was banned during the Emergency of 1975.
But after Indira Gandhi lost the 1977 election, the new Janata Party government cleared the film and had it premiered on State-run Doordarshan.
It was Suchitra Sen’s last Hindi film, as she retired from films altogether in 1978.

Raajneeti was first denied a certificate by the Censor Board as they thought the lead character -- played by Katrina Kaif -- was inspired by the Congress party's chief Sonia Gandhi.
Director Prakash Jha rubbished this allegation, saying his only inspiration was Mahabharata.
Ultimately, the film was granted a U/A certificate after it removed some scenes and references which suggested that women have to compromise to get ahead in politics. Some intimate scenes and excessive violence were also cut.
