Kumar was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital in suburban Andheri a few days back, following pain and swelling in gall bladder.
"The surgery went well, it was successful and he is doing fine," hospital director Ram Narain said.
The surgery lasted for over an hour.
Kumar is known for acting and directing films with patriotic themes. He is fondly referred to as 'Bharat Kumar'.
The actor's memorable performances include films like Purab aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, , Woh Kaun Thi, Kranti, Do Badan and others.
In 1992, he was honoured with the Padmashri award.
