When TV stars take on the big screen...

Comedy Nights with Kapil star Kapil Sharma delivered a hit with his debut Hindi film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon.

While many TV stars harbour dreams of making it in films, only few manage to make a mark.

We take a look at the TV-to-films success stories:

Kapil Sharma

Debut film: Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon
Box office collection: Rs 50 crore

With his debut film inching closer to the Rs 50-crore mark, Kapil Sharma has stormed into Bollywood with a successful debut.

His choice of films in the future will determine his longevity in the industry, even while Sharma himself promises to focus more on his hit TV show.

Sushant Singh Rajput

Debut film: Kai Po Che!
Box office collection: Rs 45 crore

Sushant made his film debut with the commercially successful and critically acclaimed Kai Po Che! in 2013 costarring Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh.

He followed it up with a solo hit with Shuddh Desi Romance.

His third film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! didn't cover much of a distance; all eyes are now on his M S Dhoni: The Untold Story, where he plays the title role.

Ayushmann Khurrana

Debut film: Vicky Donor
Box Office collection: Rs 41 crore

When singer-VJ Ayushmann Khurrana chose Vicky Donor as his Bollywood debut, many wondered if he was making a mistake.

The Shoojit Sircar-directed film turned out to be the biggest sleeper hit of 2012, but his following two films -- Nautanki Sala and Hawaizaada -- failed to make their mark at the box office.

Yash Raj Films' Dum Laga Ke Haisha put an end to his flop streak.

Sunny Leone, Jism 2

Debut film: Jism 2
Box Office collection: Rs 35 crore

Sunny Leone entered the Indian mainstream with Bigg Boss 5 and soon made her Bollywood debut with Pooja Bhatt's Jism 2.

She has had several hits ever since including Ragini MMS 2 and Ek Paheli Leela.

She was recently spotted in the Akshay Kumar starrer Singh is Bliing in a cameo.

Prachi Desai

Debut film: Rock On!
Box Office collection: Rs 25 crore

After a dream debut with Farhan Akhtar's Rock On!!, Prachi has starred in some big hits like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Bol Bachchan and a handful of decent ones like Life Partner.

Reportedly very selective about her films now, the actress, who rose to fame with Ekta Kapoor's daily soap Kasamh Se, is currently busy shooting for Tony D'Souza's Azhar, in which she plays Emraan Hashmi's wife.

Vidya Balan

Debut film: Parineeta
Box Office collection: Rs 17 crore

Several TV serials (remember Hum Paanch?), commercials and false starts later, Vidya Balan finally completed her debut film Parineeta and garnered a lot of praise for her retrained portrayal of the titular character.

She may have been hit by a spat of flops but the acclaimed actress is expected to bounce back soon.

Manish Paul

Debut film: Mickey Virus
Box Office collection: Rs 7.8 crore

A popular personality on TV, Manish continues to host shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa following his big screen debut.

Mickey Virus was a decent film but failed to earn big at the box office.

He will next be seen in Tere Bin Laden Dead or Alive and Katha

R Madhavan

Debut film: Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein
Box Office collection: Rs 5.5 crore

R Madhavan's TV career (Banegi Apni Baat, Saaya) made way for his Hindi debut Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein, which wasn't a commercial success when it released but went on to be a well-liked film over time.

He has just delivered a Rs 150 crore blockbuster with Aanand L Rai's Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

Irrfan

Debut film:  Kasoor
Box Office collection: Rs 5.3 crore

Back in the late 1980s, Irrfan was seen in numerous TV serials including Shrikant, Bharat Ek Khoj, Chanakya, Katha Sagar...

It was only more than a decade later that he starred in Vikram Bhatt's film Kasoor.

The Aftab Shivdasani-Lisa Ray suspense thriller, where Irrfan played a prosecutor, was a hit and he has gradually turned into a globally renowned actor of repute, currently being praised for Meghna Gulzar's terrific Talvar.

Shah Rukh Khan

Debut film: Deewana
Box Office collection: Rs 5 crore

Shah Rukh Khan's success story is stuff industry legends are made of.

After setting many records and winning all acting nods that exist, SRK is gearing up for his upcoming films Dilwale, Fan and Raees.

Meanwhile, talks are already on for his next set of films where he is expected to work with the likes of Aanand L Rai and Imtiaz Ali.
