Exciting times ahead at the Malayalam box office.

This Onam will witness five new Malayalam releases battling it out at the cinemas.

Ranjith’s Mohanlal starrer Loham, which released last week, has opened to rather disappointing reviews but the wide release has helped it garner good initial collections.

Jeethu Joseph’s Life of Josootty, Nadir Shah’s Amar Akbar Anthony and Anil Radhakrishnan Menon’s Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi have now been postponed to a later date.

Here is a look at the films that hit screens this weekend.

Utopiayile Rajavu

Director: Kamal
Cast: Mammootty, Jewel Mary

The quirky song Uppinu pona vazhiyethu, sung by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi and Jassie Gift, has raised expectations from Kamal’s new film.

The story is set in a fictitious village named Kokrankara, where C P Swathanthran (Mammootty) lives. The heroine, TV anchor turned actor Jewel Mary, plays an activist named Umadevi. The film is said to be a social satire.

Utopiayile Rajavu, produced under the banner of Grande Film Corporation, has screenplay by P S Rafeeque and camerawork by Neil D’ Cunha while the music is composed by Ouseppachan.

Double Barrel
Director: Lijo Jose Pellissery
Cast: Prithviraj, Arya, Indrajith, Asif Ali

If you are a fan of wacky comedies, this one could very well be a treat this Onam.

Amen director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Double Barrel is dabbling in a genre that has not been explored enough in Malayalam cinema.

Double Barrel features an ensemble cast in curious getups, or so the trailer suggests.

Produced under the banner of August Cinemas and Amen Movie Monastery, Double Barrel boasts of camerawork by Abhinandan Ramanujam and music by Prashanth Pillai.

Kunji Ramayanam

Director: Basil Joseph
Cast: Vineeth Sreenivasan, Dhyan, Aju Varghese

Debutant director Basil Joseph’s Kunji Ramayanam unites siblings Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan on screen together for the first time.

Vineeth plays a Dubai-based Kunji Raman and his His dance in a song sequence that has already come out is a hit. The film is a laugh riot with Aju Varghese, Neeraj Madhav and Srinda Ashab adding to the fun.

Kunji Ramayanam is being produced by Little Big Films. It is shot by Vishnu Sharma while the music has been scored by Justin Prabhakaran.

Jamna Pyaari
Director: Thomas Sebastian
Cast: Kunchacko Boban, Gayathri Suresh

Director Thomas Sebastian, who made Maya Bazaar a few years back with Mammootty in the lead, has Kunchacko Boban playing an auto driver in Jamna Pyaari.

Beauty pageant winner Gayathri Suresh plays the heroine.

One of the highlights of the film is the Thrissur accent used by Kunchacko Boban. Tamil stars Roja and Sonia Aggarwal are also part of the cast.

Produced under the banner of RJ Creations, Jamna Pyaari has camerawork by Anishlal and music by Gopi Sunder.
