Spinning in a man's world

February 26, 2008 15:38 IST

There's nothing confusing about DJ Kayper.

The 24-year old of Gujarati descent, whose real name is Kaajal Bakrania, knows exactly what she wanted since the age of 12. And being a woman in the male-dominated bastion has not stopped her from striving to be the best in the world.

'That doesn't bother me much,' she tells Daily Cherez in an interview. 'As much as I try to fight it, I realise it is what it is: I'm a novelty,' she was quoted as saying.

The London-based DJ, who hosts her own show on the BBC Asian Network, has been spinning discs since the age of 15, mixing classic and current Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae/Dancehall, 80's and Soul with Bhangra and Bollywood tracks.

And now, she's looking to shake things up a bit by going old school. 'I do go old school because I think the generation of kids growing up today aren't going to know about good music,' she tells Daily Cherez.

Kayper is the first female to win The Daily Telegraph Student DJ of the Year as well as the Vestax Juice DJ competition in 2003.
