Directors pick their favourites: Dedh Ishqiya, Haider, Highway rank high

Bollywood's noted directors look back at the year 2014, and pick their favourite movies.

Take a look:



Dedh Ishqiya


Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri Dixit in Dedh Ishqiya

Raj Nidimoru (of Happy Ending and Go Goa Gone fame):

Haider: Mainly for the performances, the way it was shot and the ambiance that Vishal Bhardwaj created.

Highway: Alia Bhatt, Randeep Hooda, and for handling a thin road story in a deft way.

Ugly: Absorbing narrative, delicious devilish humour and original Indie filmmaking.

Queen: For Kangna Ranaut.

PK: Simplistic yet original Bollywood entertainment. And for Aamir Khan.

Dedh Ishqiya: Recreating its own fun world with Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi for the second time.

Filmistan: Love for Bollywood and a terrific climax.

Suleimani Keeda: Very real, new actors and a funny narrative done on a shoe-string budget.


Highway

Alia Bhatt in Highway

Subhash Kapoor (of Jolly LLB fame):

Queen: For its breezy yet revolutionary content and for Kangna’s performance. 

Ankhon Dekhi: For its soulfulness.

Highway: For Imtiaz Ali’s treatment and Alia Bhatt’s performance.

PK: For director Rajkumar Hirani and the magic he creates each time.

Dedh Ishqiya: For creating that world of adaas and adaabs that is very rare in Bollywood cinema these days.


Queen

Kangna Ranaut in Queen

Shekhar Kapoor: 'I love Queen because I find Lisa Haydon so sexy!'

Aanand Rai (of Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa fame): 'I pick Queen and Highway. They are brilliantly performed by Kangna and Alia.'


Haider

Shahid Kapoor in Haider

Tigmanshu Dhulia (of Paan Singh Tomar fame) picks Haider.


Ugly

Ronit Roy in Ugly

Sudhir Mishra (of Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi fame) likes Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, Rajat Kapoor’s Aankhon Dekhi, Imtiaz Ali’s Highway and Avinash Arun’s Marathi film Killa.

Mary Kom

Subhash Ghai picks Queen, PK and Mary Kom.

R Balki (of Paa fame) picks Aankhon Dekhi.

Labour Of Love

Basabdutta Chatterjee in Labour of Love

Bengali director Gautam Ghose, who made Hindi films like Paar, Gudia and Yatra says, “My favourite is Labour Of Love (Bengali name Asha Jaoar Majhe) directed by Aditya Bikram Sengupta. It won the Best Debut film in Venice. A rare cinematic experience. I have not seen a better Indian film in recent times.”
